At the onslaught of the October 7 attack, 42-year-old Nahal infantry brigade Commander Colonel  Yehonatan Steinberg left his home at Kibbutz Shomriah to join his soldiers at the Gaza environ area. On his way there, near Kerem Shalom, he encountered Hamas terrorists, engaged in a fire exchange with them and was killed. His name was the first of the soldiers killed in action on October 7 that the IDF permitted to disclose. He was survived by a wife and six children. May he rest in peace.
