At 45, Warrant Officer Ido Rosenthal was the most veteran fighter in Shaldag, a special forces unit of the Israel Air Force. He served in many operations that have yet to be made known. Together with others from his unit, he was rushed toward the area bordering Gaza on October 7, 2023. Their objective was Kibbutz Be’eri, but along the way, they spotted terrorists approaching Kibbutz Alumim and they joined with the kibbutz’s emergency squad, which had already managed to kill many terrorists. Together, the kibbutz squad and Shaldag fought the terrorists at point-blank range and drove them out of the kibbutz. The Shaldag soldiers consider that this battle prevented a massacre that would have rivaled the one at Kibbutz Be’eri. In the course of the battle at Kibbutz Alumim, Rosenthal lost his life. He was posthumously promoted from Warrant Officer to Chief Warrant Officer.
