When the missile attack began and reports of a multi-site incursion arrived on the morning of October 7, 2023, Lt. Shilo Cohen swiftly donned his uniform and left his home in Sderot to confront the terrorists. At the city’s entrance, he joined the Sayeret Matkal patrol and fought in numerous engagements with terrorists along Highway 232, in Kibbutz Mefalsim, near the Black Arrow Monument and at the Sa’ad Junction.
Shilo’s final battle was in Kibbutz Be’eri, the site of a multi-casualty incursion by many dozens of terrorists. Although he sustained injuries to his arm and leg during the fighting, he persevered, continuing to fight, until his force sustained heavy fire and he was fatally injured when he exposed himself in order to encircle the terrorists from a higher position.
