Chief Sergeant Yanir Bar was responsible for security at the rave near Kibbutz Re’im, attended by approximately 3,000 people. Towards the end of his shift on the morning of October 7, 2023, an unusual series of missile volleys rang out. Like his fellow security personnel, he instructed the rave attendees to disperse. When he noticed a young woman with facial injuries, he led her to a nearby gas station, where other wounded people sought refuge. Realizing that terrorists might be making their way toward them, he ushered everyone in the gas station into the protected room of the convenience store. He then arranged the parked vehicles outside the station to block access to it and used refrigerators to barricade the convenience store’s entrance. “I said to myself: I have 15 bullets in my gun, 14 are for them and I’ll keep one for myself, because I won’t let them take me to the Gaza Strip alive.” Thanks to the barriers he set up, the terrorists were diverted away from the gas station, ultimately saving the lives of all those who had sought shelter there.
