Superintendent Martin Kuzmitskas before he was killed: “This is what
I’ve been waiting for – to fight terrorists”
Superintendent Martin Kuzmitskas, 46, served in the Israel Police Enforcement Unit
Operation Department in various combat roles, the last of which was commander of the Baz
operational platoon. On the morning of October 7, after ending a night shift, he returned to
his home in the city of Sderot. Upon receiving news of the terrorist attack he took his
personal firearm and headed out towards the fire exchange. He liaised with the commander
of the Police southern district, commissioner Amir Cohen, and they both advanced on the
enemy’s position, encountering many of the terrorists on their way to the Sderot police
station, which was seized by a large group of the terrorists. Together, they eliminated many
of the terrorists but tragically, Martin was killed by a sniper’s bullet. Moments before the
engagement with the terrorists, he told his commander, Commissioner Cohen: “Sir, this is
what I’ve been waiting for – to fight terrorists”. Martin Kuzmitskas received a posthumous
rank of deputy commissioner. May he rest in peace.
