Sergeant Major (Res.) Omri Michaeli became an icon of Operation Protective Edge when after being wounded he was photographed on his way to the hospital with an Israeli flag across his chest. Nine years later — on Saturday, October 7 — he once more found himself fighting in the south at the start of the attack. He had been driving in a private car, together with a friend from the Duvdevan unit, toward the communities neighboring the Gaza Strip. He and his friend encountered terrorists, eliminated two of them, and then continued toward the battle at Kibbutz Kfar Aza. There were already two soldiers injured, and the terrorists had seized some of the houses. Michael charged forward at the head of the force and was killed. May he rest in peace.
