When the attack started, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, it became clear that the emergency squad of the kibbutz was strongly outnumbered. From among the squad, only Saar Margolis of blessed memory, formerly civilian security coordinator of the kibbutz, and Shai Asher, the current deputy coordinator, were waging battle. The rest of the squad either were barricaded in their homes or happened to be away from the kibbutz. Lieutenant Ido Ofri joined the fighting, armed only with a handgun. He rescued women and children from the kibbutz, assembled them all in one place, and also rescued the civilian security coordinator, Roni Spaj, who had taken refuge in the safe room of his home, together with his family, when terrorists overran the building. He moved from house to house and continued battling all that night.
