After the surprise attack by Hamas and the breach of the border barrier, the rapid response team of Kibbutz Zikim was deployed to positions on the kibbutz fence. Kobi, one of the members of the team, realized that terrorists rather than IDF soldiers were emerging from the IDF Savannah van that had stopped nearby. He opened fire on them before they could fire an RPG at him, catching them off guard. Although the terrorists responded with machine gun fire and explosives, the members of the rapid-response team rushed to the area and drove them out. With the assistance of a combat officer who was a resident of the kibbutz and happened to be at home during the battle, they managed to outflank the terrorists and eliminate them. The vigilance, composure and quick action of the rapid-response team prevented an incursion into the kibbutz, saving many lives.
