The Nahal Reconnaissance Unit provided security for the Sofa outpost and its surroundings on the morning of October 7, 2023, and upon hearing of the invasion, immediately engaged the terrorists. After the company commander was killed in battle, Staff Sergeant Y. took command, and he and his soldiers prevented some 20 terrorists from breaching the main gate of the outpost. Sgt. Y then commanded the battle in which the terrorists who infiltrated through the back gate were eliminated, coordinating with Air Force combat helicopters that arrived to provide support for our troops. Despite being wounded in the fighting, Staff Sergeant Y. bravely rescued his injured comrade under fire and retrieved the company commander’s body. In September 2022, Staff Sergeant Y. was awarded a medal for thwarting terrorist activities in the Jalma incident, in which the late Major Bar Falah was killed.
