On the morning of the attack, members of Kibbutz Magen’s security team were called to go to the kibbutz perimeter fence after terrorists breached the fence and entered the kibbutz grounds, not far from the community’s residential area. A battle at close range ensued between the security team and dozens of heavily armed terrorists, equipped among others with RPGs and grenades. The security team deployed in front of the kibbutz houses and waged a holding battle against the terrorists until the arrival of IDF forces six or seven hours later.
Three members of the security team were wounded during the encounter, including the kibbutz’s head of the security team, Baruch Cohen. Two members of the security team were killed in action: Sergent Major ( res.) Ofir Mordechai Yaron and Avi Fleischer, who was mortally wounded during a battle with the terrorists about 30-40 meters from his own home, and later died in the hospital. May they rest in peace.
