Yaniv Ohana, of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, drove out to defend the kibbutz as a member of its emergency squad, and next to the armory he found himself facing a squad of terrorists. He eliminated some of them, but when he returned to his house he saw many terrorists in the parking lot. He fired at them from his car, and as a result an explosive charge was triggered, injuring more of the terrorists. During the exchange of fire, he was wounded; but he managed to make his escape.
Meanwhile, his wife Yula was with their two children, 9 and 12 years old, in a storage box under a bed in their safe room. They had locked the house and closed the safe room’s door, but they heard an explosion that told them the terrorists had broken into the house. The terrorists entered the safe room, sat on the bed, spoke together, and began putting their ammunition in order. Next the mother and children heard more explosions and understood that the terrorists had begun torching the house. They managed to raise the cover of the storage box and they fled the safe room as the house went up in flames. They hid outside the house in a storeroom, locking themselves in, and stayed there for nine hours until IDF forces arrived.
