Yehiel Ezkiel from the city of Ofakim, was the first to arrive at the scene of carnage on Saturday morning, October 7, arriving well ahead of the security and rescue forces. He set out to rescue any survivors, unarmed. He did not encounter terrorists, but was the first who witnessed the magnitude of the slaughter in his neighborhood: 50 bodies scattered in a radius of four streets. For hours, he roamed the sites where the slaughter happens, identifying many of the neighborhood residents, whom he personally knew, but tragically, he could not find any survivors.
