On the Black Saturday, commander of the 13th battalion of the Golani brigade, Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg , was at home at Kibbutz Almog near the Dead Sea. On the morning of October 7, he rushed to the fighting arena at the Gaza environ communities, receiving firsthand information from his deputy that the area is swarming with Hamas terrorists, later learning that his deputy and another of the battalion’s officer have been wounded. Upon arriving at the arena, Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg engaged with numerous terrorists in kibbutz Kfar Aza, until he arrived at a home where two babies were lying quietly in their crib, with the bodies of their parents – murdered by Hamas terrorists – lying on the floor next to them. Greenberg and his soldiers wrapped the infants in a blanket and evacuated them in their armored personnel carrier. Battalion 13 under Lt. Col. Greenberg’s command, had displayed outstanding valor since October 7, losing 41 offices and soldiers in the battles of kibbutz Nachal Oz. The battalion has been playing a crucial role since the onslaught of the IDF ground maneuver into the Gaza Strip, taking part in unending battles within the Strip. The battalion seized the Hamas parliament building,  the Gaza military police station, and the parade ground, where the terrorists convened before embarking on their murderous attack in Israel.

In the battle on December 12, 2023, four fighters from a combined Golani force, from the 53rd Battalion and from the Combat Engineering Corps, were ambushed by terrorists in the Shujaiya neighborhood in the northern Gaza Strip. There was concern that one of the officers had been kidnapped into a tunnel shaft, and all the battalion commanders in the neighboring sectors rushed to the scene and began a battle to rescue the wounded. After two and a half hours of fierce battle, under pouring rain and incessant fire, nine officers and soldiers, including Lt. Col. Greenberg, fell. May his memory be blessed

Upon hearing the reports of the terrorist incursion into the Gaza Division’s bases on October 7, 2023, Captain Nurit, the division’s combat intelligence company commander, rushed to join her soldiers with two other companies at the base and deploy them in the field.  They successfully neutralized terrorists they encountered and at the same time deployed a drone that aided in identifying the primary infiltration sites, notably the command center. Amid small arms fire and grenades, the forces pressed forward toward the command center room, which had fallen into the hands of the terrorists, and eventually reclaimed control of the area. “The citizens of Israel need to feel safe and secure,” says Capt. Nurit. “We are here to protect and safeguard everyone, and we will continue to do so.” During the clashes at the base, one of the female soldiers lost her life, and several others, including Captain Nurit, sustained injuries.

Mickey and his family from Kibbutz Nahal Oz woke up Saturday morning to an unusual barrage of artillery fire. After about an hour of shelling, they received a message indicating that terrorists had infiltrated the kibbutz. Mickey readied his weapon.  When the terrorists shattered the window adjacent to the family’s protected room – where his wife and young daughter sought shelter – he responded with rapid fire, forcing them to retreat. They attempted to gain entry through another window, but Mickey outmaneuvered them. His swift reaction drove them away from the house, but they soon returned with heavy ammunition and used an RPG to blast open the front door.

Approximately 12 terrorists entered the house. Mickey took cover behind a concrete wall at the entrance to the protected room, displaying remarkable composure as he engaged in combat with them. For about an hour and a half, he responded by shooting from his position behind the wall every time they shot in his direction, eliminating all the terrorists who approached the protected room. Finally, the terrorists hurled a stun grenade, forcing him to enter the protected room, where he clung tightly to the door handle to prevent them from breaking in. During this time, the terrorists tried to negotiate with him to convince the family to leave the protected room. He responded that his family would come out of the room only if the terrorists laid down their weapons. But the moment the terrorists opened the door, Mickey fired a volley of bullets and killed the terrorist at the entrance. The remaining terrorists fled. The rescue teams arrived after midnight. The entire family, the three in the house as well as a daughter who was in another residence, emerged unharmed from the ordeal.

The Suissa family – the father Dolev, the mother Odiya and their two daughters, aged 3 and 6 – encountered terrorists near the shopping center in Sderot. The terrorists murdered the father, and Amar Abu Sabila, of Abu-Talul, who happened to be nearby, rushed to help the traumatized mother and her two young daughters reach the nearby police station. Unbeknownst to them, the police station had already been taken over by terrorists. When they arrived at the entrance, terrorists shot Amar in the head while he was still in the car. Odiya Suissa was also murdered in the encounter. The two girls hid in the back seat under a sheet until the army forces came to rescue them, saving their lives. Amar was married and had two young children aged 4 and 2. Amar’s cousin reported that he had contacted his family and told them that he was trying to help a woman get to the police station. “He could have escaped and gotten away from there, but instead chose to help someone else because he knew she was in trouble.” May his memory be a blessing.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 7, 2023, Rami Davidian, a farmer from Moshav Patish in the northern Negev, received a call with a request to rescue a friend’s son from the massacre at the rave near Kibbutz Re’im. On the way to the rescue, he picked up other partiers fleeing to the orchards and groves, and with the help of other volunteers from the moshav, they set up a makeshift situation room and they drove hundreds of the party participants to safety in Moshav Patish. They engaged in the rescue operation around the clock, under fire, and without weapons or bullet-proof vests for protection.

In one case, he drove to rescue a young woman from five or six terrorists. When he finally reached her, the terrorists apparently took him for a member of the security forces, and after he attacked them with an agricultural implement, he successfully rescued the young woman from their grasp and escaped with her from the scene.

On that same Saturday, Rami lost his niece Ofir Davidian, an 18-year-old soldier from Moshav Patish, who was killed in the battle against the terrorists. Ofir’s father was also one of the rescuers in the improvised situation room Rami set up.

Realizing that terrorists might be making their way toward them, he ushered everyone in the gas station into the protected room of the convenience store. He then arranged the parked vehicles outside the station to block access to it and used refrigerators to barricade the convenience store’s entrance. “I said to myself: I have 15 bullets in my gun, 14 are for them and I’ll keep one for myself, because I won’t let them take me to the Gaza Strip alive.” Thanks to the barriers he set up, the terrorists were diverted away from the gas station, ultimately saving the lives of all those who had sought shelter there.

Early on the morning of October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists penetrated into Israeli territory after breaching the border fence. Lt. Col. Yaron Buskila, an operations officer in the reserves, headed for his base as soon as he heard of the incursion.
Buskila first encountered terrorists on his way to the Gaza Division’s headquarters. They ambushed his force from the foliage along the roads and from elsewhere, wearing IDF uniforms and using IDF equipment that they had captured. Buskila’s force managed to unblock the roads and take a toll on the terrorists while being careful not to hit our own troops or civilians.

Once Buskila’s force had broken through on its way to the Gaza Division’s headquarters, the base itself came under attack. Some 40 terrorists made their way in. The terrorists were armed with rifles, RPGs, knives, and grenades. They were prepared to blockade themselves and battle inside a large office area like the divisional headquarters. The Israeli force, aided by a helicopter, managed to fend off many terrorists but others had begun to hide inside the building.
This was the beginning of the battle’s third phase: fighting from room to room, inside the post, to clear it of terrorists. Combat officers fought alongside desk officers, senior officers alongside footsoldiers, until the post was safe inside and all the terrorists there were dead. The battle lasted five or six hours because the terrorists had hidden well, in concealed corners and under camouflage nets.

Lt. Col. Buskila led the fighting coolheadedly, including the intricate coordination of helicopter fire, and he succeeded in repelling the terrorists, clearing the base, and preventing it from falling into the hands of Hamas. According to Buskila: “The fighting spirit, the battle readiness, the rapid enlistment of the reserves, and the turning of the tide of battle all worked exceptionally well.”

In the morning of the Simchat Torah holiday, on October 7, 33-year-old Druze Lieutenant Colonel Salman Habka from Yanuh Jat in the Galilee received news of the multi-theater security breach in the Gaza border belt. Although Habka’s soldiers from the 53d battalion of the 188th Artillery division were posted for the duration of the holiday in the Hebron area, he dispatched troops from his unit to the south, to the Ze’elim area. The troops reinforced the troops already fighting in the field, adding a 6tank unit to the force. His troops were deployed in the Be’eri, Kfar Aza and Nachal Oz kibbutzim. An additional team of the 53 battalion was sent to the Erez checkpoint.

Lieutenant Colonel Salman Habka himself left his home in Yanuh Jat in the morning of the attack and joined the Paratrooper Corps force that was fighting in Kibbutz Be’eri along with two of his unit’s tanks. With joint forces they scoured house after house in the kibbutz, eliminating the terrorists. Habka’s decision to divide his tank force among several theaters proved to be not only courageous but  also lifesaving, and his soldiers were material to the fighting in the kibbutzim and the Erez checkpoint.

At a later point in the fighting, Lieutenant Colonel Salman Habka joined the forces entering  the Gaza Strip and was killed on the night of November 2 during the fighting in the north of the Strip. He is survived by a wife and a two-year-old son. May he rest in peace.

Guy and another friend, Adar, who was a member of Kibbutz Reim and a fighter on the Maglan recon unit and the only one with a firearm, stayed outside the safety room to protect their friends. They were able to eliminate the two terrorists who entered the house but were wounded by the grenades the terrorist threw at them before they were shot. Before the siren went off, Sagit Levi Gelfarb preempted the attack and Alerted the Security Team

At 6:25 on Saturday morning, even before the sirens went off in Kibbutz Erez (the only siren

heard was in Kibbutz Native Ha’asarak, a mile away) – Sagit Levi Gelfarb, head of the kibbutz

security team – instructed all members of the kibbutz to lock themselves in their home

safety room until further notice. At the same time she ran to open the command room,

already hearing the shouts of the terrorists outside the kibbutz. These two resourceful

decisions allowed the kibbutz security team to intercept the terrorist squad minutes away

from invading the kibbutz and save untold lives . The eight-member team valiantly fought

some 30 terrorists. Once in the command center, she attempted to call the military and

rescue forces for aid, but to no avail. Two young men arrived at the command center,

having come to their morning shift at the kibbutz café and were caught in the battle. Sagit

led them under fire to the safety room in her own house. Wounded members of the kibbutz

and the security team began arriving at the command center. After long hours, by 11 o’clock

most of the terrorists were eliminated or driven away from the kibbutz. Thanks to Levi

Gelfarb resourcefulness, Kibbutz Erez was spared the tragedy that befell the surrounding communities. Atrocity

Lieutenant Colonel M. from the Reim military base impersonated a terrorist and eliminated Hamas terrorists

Lieutenant Colonel M., commander of the Gaza Division Tracker Unit in Reim, woke up with

the rocket barrage from Gaza on Saturday morning. The moment he learned that terrorist

made their way into Israel, he aimed to go to the scene with his soldiers, however, car loads

of survivors from the nearby Nova festival massacre began arriving at the base and he

realized that the situation is far graver then he thought. He and his soldiers wanted to head

out to the party area but then noticed truckloads of terrorists speeding towards the base. He

turned his force around and went back to face the terrorists, whom they fought for almost

an hour, and were able to repel them. However, the terrorists began surrounding the base

and some were able to breach the parameter fence.

Lieutenant Colonel M. and several of his soldiers spread out around the premises. He was

able to eliminate one of the terrorists, and then – with daredevil resourcefulness – realized

he could dupe them. He began speaking Arabic to one of his soldiers. Upon hearing this, the

terrorist mistook him for one of them, as they were also wearing IDF uniforms, and called

him over. He responded in Arabic, calling them to come to him and when they approached –

shot and killed them. The battle lasted for hours, later with the help of backup forces. At six

in the evening – the base had been cleansed of all terrorists.

taking with them firearms and first aid equipment. They reached the battle arena at around

nine o’clock in the morning and engaged with the terrorist in the proximity of the kibbutz

However, when the third grenade came rolling into the room, Neta threw himself on it to

which started a fire. Irine was able to put out the fire and then hid under the bed behind the

Former Sri Lankan policeman tried to save civilians and was injured

Sujit Prainkareh, 39 from Sri Lanka, was a policeman for 17 years in his country before he

came to Israel, where he works as a sanitation and maintenance worker at the Zikim beach.

When the rocket barrage began on Saturday morning he ran to the public shelter at the

beach, in which 10 civilians had also taken shelter. When terrorists arrived, they lobbed a

grenade into the shelter, and Sujit grabbed it and threw it back. The terrorists entered and

began spraying the shelter with bullets. Sujit was hit and fell to the ground with others

falling on top of him. He lost consciousness. All of the people in the shelter were killed aside

from Sujit and one other person.

When he regained consciousness, he realized that the only other survivor is no longer in the

shelter. He managed to crawl back to his dorm room, and bandage his wounds with a shirt.

Only at 13:30 he was evacuated by army forces and taken to the hospital. Since Sujit arrived

in Israel without a work permit, the State will not recognize him as an official victim of terror

and he is not receiving the medical care he needs– when he came to the hospital for follow

up treatment, he was refused on the grounds that he has no medical insurance. Four days

after the attack, he had to report back to work in order to earn money to sustain himself and

Captain Bar Zonstein Fought with Outstanding Valor and Skill

Captain Bar Zonstein was posted at the small “Mars” outpost on the Gaza border, along with

the Golani auxiliary infantry force, Battalion 51. Around 6:30 the morning on Saturday

October 7, his commander informed him that there was an enemy raid near Kibbutz Nirim,

and he set out to the area with his tank and crew. This was the last time he heard from his

commander, and from that point on, he was left to act independently, drawing information

on the situation in the field from intermittent reports. He advanced with his tank alone,

through the crop fields, and encountered a three-man terrorist squad, eliminating them with

the tank machine gun. Further on, he encountered two terrorist squads, shote several and

ran the others over. He then receives reports of the battle at the Kisufim outpost, makes his

way there, and encounters two terrorist squads with anti-tank weapons, both of which he

eliminates.

He receives a report from one of his company’s tanks, which was protecting the kibbutzim of

Nirim, Nir Oz and Magen, that the tank was hit and surrounded by terrorists. The soldiers

inside that tank were wounded and the tank couldn’t rotate its turret. He liaised with the

damaged tank and ordered it to follow him. On the way he identifies the tank of one of his

platoon commanders, burnt. He identifies two terrorist pickup trucks full of bodies speeding

towards Gaza. He fires at them twice and gets hit by two anti-tank grenades fired at him,

hitting and damaging his solar tank. His tank began leaking solar and hundreds of terrorists

surrounded it. He began shooting them with the machine gun and running them over with

the tank.

Both tanks – one with wounded soldiers and a disabled turret, and the other with leaking

solar tanks – made their way to kibbutz Magen where they encountered and eliminated a

to the Mars outpost, to collect an additional tank. Captain Zonstein got a ride with one of his

soldiers in the trunk of a Border Police car and they got off at the Kisufim intersection, where

they made their way through terrorist infested terrain to the outpost, fighting terrorists the

entire way. They eventually commandeered the tank and used it to continue fighting

terrorists until Monday. Captain Zonstein and his soldiers managed to kill approximately 70-

90 terrorist within two and a half days of fighting.

Lieutenant T. took charge of the Kisufim military command center full of wounded, under fire

Lieutenant T., commander of the surveillance unit in the Command Center at the IDF Kisufim

base, was in the commend room already at 5:30 am on October 7. Immediately with the

start of the rocket barrage, all the base surveillance soldiers reported to the command

center. One of them notice an ATV approaching the border fence. Lieutenant T. immediately

announced on the communications system “raid” – a procedure the soldiers are well familiar

with and trained in. By doing so she helped disperse some of the battle fog that existed at

the time. She tried to operate the overhead weapons’ systems on the fence, however, three

were already destroyed by Hamas terrorists, and a short while after she was able to operate

the remaining three – the terrorists disabled them as well.

The command room, which was a designated safety room, held at the time of the attack 22

female soldiers. Special forces were sent to cleans the base of the terrorist, and they waged

close quarters combat with them, at times at close range, and the command center began

taking in more and more wounded soldiers. Several of the surveillance soldiers began

tending to the wounded, while their comrades continued calmly to operate the command

center. The monitors in the room showed fighting in Kibbutz Kisufim as well, and the

surveillance soldiers alerted an attack helicopter, an attack drone and a tank, which

eliminated the terrorists in the area. At that point, the center’s water and electricity supply

had been cut out, and in it were some 60 people, most of them wounded. They remained

Danny Wobek and Oren Stern fought terrorists heroically at Kibbutz Nativ Ha’asarah

With the onset of the attack on Kibbutz Native Ha’asarah near the Gaza border, Danny

Wobak (45) and Major Oren Stern (49) who was a member of the kibbutz security team, ran

out to fight the terrorists that had infiltrated the kibbutz. Not having enough time to

properly prepare, Danny was wearing beach sandals and carrying only his personal firearm

and his friend Oren had a rifle. When a terrorist shot at them from behind the door of the

neighbors’ house, their dog Rakbin – a Doggo Argentino – charged at the terrorist and scared

him away. Tragically, the terrorist took multiple shots and Rakbin and killed him. But thanks

to the canine’s heroics, Danny Woben an Oren Stern were able to fire back at the terrorists.

Tragically all three lost their lives, but Rakbin’s owners, Iliah Kabalin and his partner, were

able to hide and were saved. Danny Wobak volunteered for years with Zaka’s scuba divers’

unit and was involved in many events of saving lives and bringing victims to an honorable

burial. May they rest in peace.

Yoav Sheli and his friends, who all serve in a combat unit, were attending the Nova rave in Re’im while on leave from the army. When the attack started on Saturday morning, Sheli rallied his friends and they ran to Kibbutz Be’eri, in which one of them resided, to participate in the ongoing fighting there. They found a dead Israeli inside an overturned vehicle and retrieved his weapon. In the apartment of their friend from the kibbutz, they changed into IDF uniforms to avoid the risk of friendly fire. The friend took his own weapon with him and they collected other weapons they found in the field. They then established contact with the rapid response team and joined its members while the battle was ongoing.

Together with the rapid response team, they fought intense battles in the kibbutz and killed about 20 terrorists. They managed to take control of a house captured by terrorists and gathered civilians that were in it into a protected room. They then went outside and brought in other people from other houses into the protected them. They took an AK-47 rifle from one of the terrorists they killed,w and a kibbutz member took a position on a rooftop, from where he killed eight more terrorists. Finally, they joined up with the Shaldag fighters in the kibbutz and regained control over the kibbutz.

Matan Malichi, a member of Kibbutz Ein HaShlosha, lay in ambush for terrorists in the room adjoining the safe room of his home, while his wife and children hid inside the safe room. He alerted a friend from the elite Duvdevan unit, Ahia Sharvit, who looked for weapons and reinforcements. In the meantime, the terrorists ate and drank in the kitchen, exited and entered the house and other houses on the kibbutz, and burned down a neighboring house with a woman inside. When one of the terrorists tried to enter the safe room, Malichi shot him dead — with a single bullet, in the hope of not attracting attention — and hid the body. Finally, when Sharvit arrived with a force from the Border Police, the terrorists fled and Malichi took part in clearing the kibbutz of terrorists.
